MAY 2007 - Billboards - A Victory for Common Sense

Strong lobbying by the marketing and advertising industry bodies has brought about a sensible conclusion to the Auckland City Council’s proposed bylaw which would have removed 75% of the inner city’s billboards.  The Marketing Association’s submission fully supported the OAANZ stance that the proper policing of existing bylaws was the only action needed.

Here are the main points of the Council review panel’s findings:

  • Staying: Lawful billboards and most lawful signs
  • Going: Central area new free-standing billboards (and current illegal billboards)
  • Restrictions: One billboard per building
  • Dispensations: Needed for billboards in restricted zones
  • Phase-out: 5 years to remove or modify billboards on heritage and character buildings

In stark contrast to the way Auckland City went about this issue, the Marketing Association was invited to engage in preliminary discussions with Manukau City regarding their billboards and signs bylaws.
