JUL 2007 - Health TV – A New Wave in Health Promotion

Health TV is a new channel which aims to entertain and educate people as they wait to see a health professional.  HealthTV has commitment to install from 200 of New Zealand’s largest Healthcare providers, and is rolling out the first phase of the network within the month.   Health TV has been developed by an enterprising group of  young Kiwis who recognised the potential of a new technology, internet protocol TV, and the opportunity to do some good. 

  • Health TV is absolutely FREE to air at medical centre’s and hospitals
  • Health TV supplies everything for free to doctors, including a new TV screen and innovative speakers, which isolate sound from reception
  • Content = Health TV’s programming showcases New Zealand music, profiles Kiwi icons and emerging talents and tells inspiring stories about individuals who are doing good in their communities
  • Sponsorship of the entertainment, music and lifestyle section enables brands not directly related to the Health sector to help support the dynamic channel
  • Health TV’s audience is captive
  • Health TV’s audience comprises a high proportion of mums – the key influencer in the family
  • Health TV offers a 10-hour programme loop, delivered via narrowcast via internet protocol technology
  • Narrowcasting means every screen in the network can play different programme schedules – this allows different messages to be played to different demographics on the network simultaneously, improving programme relevance
  • Health TV will screen NO prescription medicine, NO junk food and NO soft drink advertising
  • Health TV conducted a trial service in five medical centre’s in Auckland and Wellington which AC Nielsen researched.  

Findings included:

  • 94% of people who viewed the Health TV trial thought it was a good way to learn about health and wellbeing
  • 67% of people said they would be purchasing groceries/products within the next 2 hours
  • 74% thought Health TV enhanced their wait time
  • 89% rated the concept of Health TV favourably
