APR 2008 - Mounting Threats to Freedom of Speech to Be Debated at This Year's Public Relation's Conference
This year’s public relations industry conference in Auckland addresses the controversial issue of advocacy and freedom of speech.
During the conference, on May 22-23, stimulating speakers will discuss specific advocacy issues such as the Electoral Finance Act, the proposed restrictions on advertising foods, and Government lobbying. An underlying theme will be the massive changes taking place in the way we communicate, particularly with the ascendancy of web-based communications.
The conference will be opened by Matthew Horton, CEO of Horton Media, who will explore the impact of the emerging new world of unlimited communications choices. Other highlights include an address by Sydney-based futurist Richard Watson and a session on sustainability by internationally recognised expert Michael Field from North Shore City Council.
Several workshops will be led by those who are using online tools successfully, and other sessions will focus on internal communications, reputation management and behaviour change. Panel discussions will give delegates the opportunity to hear and participate in lively, stimulating debate.
At the Friday night conference dinner the annual Public Relations Institute Awards will be presented, along with the Communicator of the Year Award.
