Data Advisory Network
Who's DAN when he's at work?
DAN is the Data Advisory Network and we're here to work for you.
Launched by the Marketing Association in 2004, the aim and mission of the Data Advisory Network is to provide relevant and pragmatic guidelines for marketers and business decision-makers on the gathering, manipulation, storage and use of data. We deliver this expertise through interactive forums, resource centres, specialised events and access to leaders in the industry.
DAN's key objectives for 2007 are to provide:
- Direction: Develop the DAN resource centre by producing best-practice guidelines on a range of data topics
- Awareness: Position DAN as the authority and first point of reference for data guidelines, best practice and education in New Zealand
- N-lightenment: Provide practical education on relevant data topics that are of interest to our members
But we can't achieve our objectives without your help. We need you to tell us what data topics are the most important to you, the data user. This will help us to tackle the biggest issues first.
Submissions can be emailed to the Marketing Association.

Do Yourself a Favour – NEXUS Awards Review
During 2007 a series of review meetings were held in order to look at the NEXUS Awards from ease of completing the entry form right the way through to judges’ scoring criteria. This initiative was backed up with publicity through the Data Advisory Network (DAN) and through the Marketing Association’s own DLB magazine.
We were delighted to receive 62 entries using the new entry forms and sincerely hope that the entry process was a lot less painful than previous years. Please let us know if you feel otherwise! (email Sylvia Devlin).

Data Transfer Standards - New April 2008
The transfer of data from one location to another happens every day within organisations. Methods range from one-off delivery of data on a CD from one company to another, through to real time delivery of information over the Internet. Given this, the data needs to be adequately protected when it is transferred.

Do Not Mail Service (incorporating the Deaths Index)
DAN points out that the Code of Practice for Direct Marketing [link to 4(b).1] requires members to match any prospecting list against the Marketing Association’s Do Not Mail Service (previously known as the Name Removal Register) which as of January 2005 includes the Deaths Index.
So before carrying out a marketing campaign to possible new customers, marketers must ensure they match their list of prospects against the Marketing Association's Do Not Mail or Do Not Call Service and must remove any names where there is a match. (This does not apply when communicating with existing customers, or where prospects have opted in to be communicated to.)
Please click here if you would like more information on subscribing to the Do Not Mail and / or the Do Not Call Service.

Do Not Call Service
There are many ways in which your name can get on to a telephone list. For example, you might have provided your phone number when you entered a competition, filled out a warranty card, attended an exhibition, subscribed to a magazine. Perhaps you have ordered a product through visiting a website, through a catalogue or an 0800 number on a TV advertisement. And, of course, you are very likely to have a listing in the Telephone Directory.
