Who's DAN when he's at work?

DAN is the Data Advisory Network and he's here to work for you.

Launched by the Marketing Association in 2004, the aim and mission of the Data Advisory Network is to provide relevant and pragmatic guidelines for marketers and business decision-makers on the gathering, manipulation, storage and use of data. We deliver this expertise through interactive forums, resource centres and access to leaders in the industry.

DAN's key objectives for 2007 are to provide:

  • Direction: Develop the DAN resource centre by producing best-practice guidelines on a range of data topics
  • Awareness: Position DAN as the authority and first point of reference for data guidelines and education in New Zealand
  • N-lightenment: Provide practical education on relevant data topics

But we can't achieve our objectives without your help. We need you to tell us what data topics are the most important to you, the data user. This will help us to tackle the biggest issues first.

Submissions can be emailed the Marketing Association – Sarah Bain

DAN membership is open to all Marketing Association members involved in data management – and it is FREE to join. Just email Sarah Bain to become a member.

Once you're a member we'll let you know of any developments as they happen. That way you can:

  • have your say on any hot topics
  • know when best-practice guidelines are established
  • be notified of upcoming education courses
  • access a FREE advisory service - DAN executive members have a wealth of industry experience which they’re happy to share with all DAN members. Simply submit any data questions you may have by emailing Sarah Bain.

As the Chairman of DAN in 2007 it's a great pleasure to be working with some of New Zealand's leading experts on data and database issues. We are strongly committed to improving data quality and procedures in New Zealand.

So if it's misuse of data, addressing standards, or you just have a beef with something... let us know, because "DAN is going to latch on to the industry issues like a Dyson, and clean it up!"

Paul O'Connor, DAN Chairman

Do Yourself a Favour – NEXUS Awards Review

During 2007 a series of review meetings were held in order to look at the NEXUS Awards from ease of completing the entry form right the way through to judges’ scoring criteria. This initiative was backed up with publicity through the Data Advisory Network (DAN) and through the Marketing Association’s own DLB magazine.

We were delighted to receive 62 entries using the new entry forms and sincerely hope that the entry process was a lot less painful than previous years.  Please let us know if you feel otherwise! (email Amy Bullen – amy@marketing.org.nz).

Key dates for the 2008 Direct and Interactive Marketing Awards will be confirmed later in the year.

Data Transfer Standards - New April 2008
The transfer of data from one location to another happens every day within organisations.  Methods range from one-off delivery of data on a CD from one company to another, through to real time delivery of information over the Internet. Given this, the data needs to be adequately protected when it is transferred.

NZ Privacy Guidelines for Data Cooperatives
Looking for new sources of quality data? Have you heard of the term data pooling? The DAN executive has developed Data Pooling Privacy Guidelines to assist  New Zealand organisations should they wish to enter into a data pooling collective.

Best Practice Guidelines for Direct Marketing Data

Name Removal Service (incorporating the Deaths Index)
DAN points out that the Code of Practice for Direct Marketing [link to 4(b).1] requires members to match any prospecting list against the Marketing Association’s Name Removal Register which as of January 2005 includes the Deaths Index.

So before carrying out a marketing campaign to possible new customers, marketers must ensure they match their list of prospects against the Marketing Association's Name Removal Register and remove from that list any names that appear on the Register. (This does not apply when communicating with existing customers, or where prospects have opted in to be communicated to.)

Please click here if you would like more information on subscribing to the Name Removal Register.
