Teams from seven universities accepted the Brand Challenge to devise a credible solution to a real-world marketing problem – in this case one provided by corporate giant Frucor.
“The opportunity to develop and present a strategy for a real-life business scenario is one that the majority of university students don't have the chance to experience,” says Hilary Derrick, a member of the victorious Otago University team.
“Having presented alongside fierce competition we were ecstatic to be announced as the winners and would like to thank Frucor, IAG and the Marketing Association for making this event possible.”
The competition requires teams from the universities to solve a challenge posed by a company with a limited budget and within a very short timeframe. Students compete not only on the basis of ingenuity and creativity but also on the quality of their presentation, their research, their justifications and the financial information which underpins their recommendations.

The competition is presented by the Student Development Society (SDS), was hosted in Auckland by Otago University and was sponsored by the Marketing Association, IAG and Frucor – who have the opportunity to get a first-hand view of the finest young talent in the country.
“Engaging with tertiary students through the Brand Challenge competition is just one part of the Marketing Association’s objective to provide Tertiary Students with a seamless transition into the workforce. We aim to bridge the gap between academia and industry in line with the Government’s business growth agenda by creating a talent pool of employable graduates,” says Gill Stewart, CEO of the Marketing Association.
Dr John Guthrie, Chairman of the SDS was full of praise for the students. “One of the challenges universities face is keeping research and teaching relevant and ensuring that there is a connection between academia and business. The Brand Challenge proved to be a brilliant platform to achieve this and what we saw on Saturday is evidence that we are producing high calibre students who benefit so much from involvement with Case competitions such as the Brand Challenge.”
The student’s achievement was recognised on the day and they will get a second opportunity to showcase their talent in front of 700 senior marketers at the glittering TVNZ Marketing Awards.
“We look forward to returning to Auckland on August 27th to attend the TVNZ Marketing Awards and visit the Frucor headquarters to discuss our strategy with them,” added Derrick.
“The Brand Challenge is a great opportunity to see the amazingly talented young people who are the future of business in New Zealand. This year was no exception, with excellent presentations from seven teams, and a real tussle at the top between what were the most exceptional presentations from Otago and Victoria Universities,” says Debra Hall, chief judge, previous Chairman of the Marketing Association and independent director. “With young minds like this in our “pipeline”, the future looks bright.”
